Third-generation imaging infrared seekers reject the flares and spin-scan jammers that defeated earlier missiles. Man-portable systems are layered densely across contested airspace, and any platform that radiates to defend itself reveals its position. Warning has to arrive early enough to cue a response and be trusted enough to act on. Passive detection matters most when the radio-frequency spectrum is denied.
